I often wonder why so many of us take the time and money to participate in virtual worlds like Second Life. In the last five years, I have been diligently learning how to build, how to sell, how to get land stats, how to manage groups, how to be a resident and how to cope in here. If anyone ever told me, before I created my avatar, how hard this place could be for anyone, I might have run away from this project completely.

So much has happened in here including friendships, love, broken relationships, bad business deals, and the rest of the shenanigans in here, that I can not believe that I am still here on this grid! It's been sometimes a rocky road and sometimes smooth sailing. But... it has never been boring. Well, until now.

I don't want to expand on that thought just yet, but all of you old avis on the grid probably know what I am talking about. The grid has become... ahem... rather sanitized. Kinda. Maybe it's just because I have been here soooo long that nothing surprises me anymore. I play in here and build. I explore places and write. I go and listen to so much virtual live music that my head spins. And, when I go clubbing, I am usually bumped to death, and it is rare to receive a hello anymore from even the hosts. (Gee, you would think I wasn't registering on the grid anymore...)

But, I am ready to tackle all the stuff that gets thrown at me. I will take breathers more frequently and sometimes I might not be on the grid at all. But, I do want everyone to know this... I love this place, Second Life, more than any of you will ever know. The wonder is still here no matter how sanitized it gets, the grid is alive with imagination and artful fantasy.

Now, here I go... about to start my fifth year in 2012... raftwet jewell signing off... but only until tomorrow.

OMG! Was I bored? LOL!

I must apologize to everyone! I have been gone much of 2011 with projects in real world gaining much of my attention. I did try to network all the projects together, though. I never did forget all of you out there in the virtual world of Second Life. I really got waylaid from doing most of my duties that a lot of you have grown to know.

Everything this year was rather sporadic. I know this. I will try harder to be on the grid regularly. Maybe not everyday, but I will do my best to get here. My hat goes out to each and everyone of you... now I am heading over to THE A LIST! blog to write something over there...

Xavier and Raftwet in Second Life at PeKashee

When Xavier came back into Second Life tonight, I was overjoyed! Oh yes, Miss Raftwet was thrilled to have her partner back again. The two avatars got dressed-up and headed over for a nice chill evening over at PeKashee for dj Bodenhall. DJ was playing a very nice set of Rhythm and Blues, Jazz and Lounge... so relaxing (except I was posting pics, blogs and FB stuff... lol!).

We took a nice long break from the SL grid and now we are back! Refreshed and ready to work hard again for the grid and our groups, we can only promise we will do our very best!

Originally, I posted this photo way back in January 2011. 2011 has not been a great year for me either in Second Life or Real Life. My birth land, Japan, was hit by a terrible earthquake this year and I watched in horror as my family home was washed away into the sea. The images were awful to watch and my heart sank as I watched everything unfold before my eyes. Then my very good friend died along with my cat who was 12 years old. So much has happened this year that I took a bit of a break from Second Life... just to mend!

Both of us have been very busy in real life. My partner and I have been together now in SL and RL for over three years, and we both enjoy our group, THE A LIST! very much. We do apologize for not letting many of you know about our personal status... but, that is our business... right?

The grid has changed so much! Multiple updates on the new Viewer 2.0 have my head swimming as new functions and interface have been developed. The only complaint I have is the annoying "bounce" in inventory when it is loading or when I try to open up a folder. But, they will fix it. A lot of stuff has been fixed recently... and more to come!

I've been concentrating on a lot of new things on the grid and also working on several new projects in the real world, too. So, I haven't been on the grid as much as I usually am though I don't seem to have missed much!

Summer is looming on the horizon and I expect the grid to expand with new citizens as school lets out and more and more people hop on board to our fast moving platform in Second Life.

Both of us are looking forward to this summer! See you all at the next party, event or festival. We look forward to new regions, new friends and new interests as this grid changes, morphs and expands into every aspect of everyone's lifestyle!

Here we goooooooooo! Summer of 2011 is coming fast!

Last month, I turned 4 years old. I am not even sure if I was on the grid. The rezz day just slipped by without much notice as I was literally busy in real life that day. The rezz day was just another day except that another year had passed for me as a resident of Second Life. Four years... it just seems impossible that I have been here this long.

My regions are still here: WETLands and RiverLand, both dedicated to outdoor water sports such as surfing, rafting, paddling and swimming. The two regions are natural park-like settings created for the avatars to safely hang out with friends. There is a small outdoor ballroom on WETLands that usually have a few couples enjoying the peaceful serenity on the land.

Mainland is rarely visited much anymore as time is precious in world with other work such as THE A LIST! administrative tasks. The group seems to keep both of us incredibly busy every time we are on the grid. My other groups just run on auto pilot. They are mostly fun groups with little drama and seem almost silly compared to the seriousness of the networking group.

I am currently selling Archan which is a highly commercial area. I am putting Bisque up for sale this month as I no longer use the area anymore for anything but a little store and a small rafting area. (If you know anyone, tell them to contact me for sale or rentals on the mainland.)

I don't go clubbing as much as I used to do because of personal reasons. Gone are the days when I would spend most of my time on the grid at a club or venue. There are so many other things to do, and I find myself exploring and visiting different places in Second Life when I have time.

One of the things I love most is playing with the look of my avatar. Sometimes it's a new skin or shape, but mostly it's about make-up and hair... just like in real life! Being in real life California, makes me think of all the Southern California blondes on the beach. So "Rafee" gets a make-over frequently and becomes the blonde-haired, blue-eyed, West Coast girl that seems to scream "California!"

In real life... brunette, brown eyes, jeans and a t-shirt are more my style!

Likeable, pop tunes are always hard to find. The kind of music that gets stuck in your head over and over and over again. You know what I mean, "... Girls just wanna have fun... or Beat it beat it..." or any of the past hits from your generation of songs.

Athletes are featured doing what they do best: running, leaping, swimming etc through multitudes of sports such as football, basketball, hockey, baseball, soccer, swim, etc. I guess the video is showing the futility of trying our best and maybe not receiving what we need... gold medal, the championship or that girl you lost.

This amazing video was produced by Kaya Angel, owner of the much loved Rose Theatre at the Angel Manor sim. The Rose is a long respected and loved venue in SL that likes to explore what performance can be in SL when real life production techniques are used.

Builder Tyler Ethaniel was definitely influenced by Saturday Morning Cartoons!

Buildings were colorful and skewed. The entrance was a series of brightly lit portals as each patron was enveloped in a Kodak-colored series of rooms.

DJ Ritch was playing what could only be described as Looney Tunes! LOL!

FaceBook and THE A LIST!

Many of us have taken to the social network of FaceBook. This is a network that has the majority of the world spending incredible amounts of time socializing and sharing information. Mark Zuckerberg's baby has become a must-have on the desktop, laptop and phone. So, last year, I took THE A LIST! there, too.

Second Life has an official page there with over 100,000 plus friends and users. So, it is an important network, and I would advise that you create a profile and a business page for your interests. THE A LIST! is announcing many of our notices and events there, too. FaceBook is another place to get the word out about your djs, clubs, venues, live musicians, events, artists and anything you need to tell the world.

You can also enhance our efforts by hitting the "Like" tab on each of our business pages: THE A LIST! and RAFTWET Jewell's business pages in FaceBook. We will all grow so that our numbers grow, too.

I have also set up THE A LIST! flickr group for Second Life; a place to add your photos about your own places in Second Life and the events that you want to publicize. What I will do is pump up those groups through FaceBook, Twitter, and many other social networks for your interests. The group is an invite only, but all you have to do is hit the invite, and I will add you. Please note that all photos submitted must be PG Content Only.

If you send a notice out in THE A LIST! in Second Life please make it less than 420 characters (I think that is the limit) as FaceBook does not allow longer shouts. And, if you want to send out your own shout, you can do that by just joining us there on FaceBook and do your own notice.

I will edit your shouts from the SL notices, so please make sure it has Artist Name, Time of Event, Genre, Dress Code and Where the thingy is otherwise, avatars may be confused when they see it on Twitter or Tumblr or another blog. (Update: please add slurl to your info as I may be FB'ing your notice offline through my email. Ex: [Name of your Region] (128, 128, 23)

If you send out funny characters in the notice, please note that the RSS feed will be borked. The info will not stream throughout the universe of the internet, and you will end up missing out on expanding your own networks. Each of you want to cultivate anyone out there that might be interested in your venues and artists. Besides, I don't want to make an error in editing your important information!

DJ Barbs Kurka is at the helm spinning her brand of music, and it is a never-ending dance party like no other.

I just saw TRON (both movies). I see where the minds melded here in Second Life. The influence is everywhere! From the grid itself to the builds, the creators here have definitely taken notes from the original movie. When, I saw the originally movie just a few days ago, I was taken back by the references. They were talking about us. They were talking about Second Life.

The new movie is excellent. I don't want to talk about the film, because I want you all to see it. They honored the original, and the new movie made me cry. The reverence in the movie for this grid is spiritual, and it is the feeling I get when I am here. This is a very special place. Second Life is not just a game; as Kevin Flynn, the creator says, "the grid is a place of infinite possibilities... more beautiful than I ever dreamed... and more dangerous than I could have ever imagined."

All of us are very privileged to be here... to be a part of a grand experiment of the future of the internet. I do see the internet morphing into the concept of "The Grid." It is inevitable. I see Kevin Flynn, the visionary in the souls of Phil Linden, Sergey Brin, Larry Page, Steve Wozniak, Steve Jobs, Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg. (Yes, I am aware of the researchers at Carnegie, MIT, etc... but their research was project-based. I am not sure they saw their results in the hands of every man, woman and child in the world as these visionaries I have listed.) These are the people who have changed our lives. They are the ones who endured long hours and obstacles that we can never imagine just to bring us their dreams. I honor them today with grace and humility.

And my favorite part of the movie? ... the reverence for water and the grid.

The holiday spirit was in full swing at Boystown. All the toys were there! Jack in the box, the jester, the toy soldier, teddy bears, legos, a giant slinky and more.

Of course, the toys were a little demented and a bit broken as humor always takes first place at Boystown.

The place was packed with a good holiday spirit of fun, music and dancing. I needed this bit of silly after a long day of reflection.

Peace and goodwill... remember that is more important than anything else at anytime of the year!

A beautiful winter wonderland at BassLine Island is charming at the Hardbeatz Xmas Stage. With the whimsical train choo chooing around the twinkling Christmas trees, the very hard beats of drum and bass and dub were definitely an edgy contrast to the holiday decor. BassLine always has awesome builders creating very cool spaces.

Avatars were peppered all over the Bassline Island region at small parties with Drum and Bass, dub and reggae booming from the speakers.

When the beat enters your ears and your avi starts dancing, it's very hard to leave! You just don't leave a BassLine Junkiez parties when the dj is pumping out the tunes... party peeps!

Cherry Manga Art Sculpture at Mysterious Wave

Five visits and I finally feel like I have absorbed the art work there at Mysterious Wave. But, each time I go back, I see something new or different... or am I different this time?

Cherry Manga has been a favorite artist since I first saw her 2-dimensional work back in 2007. Several of her works hang in the corporate homes peppered around the grid. And, I have saved the best pieces for my regions: [WETLands (128, 128, 23)]

Her work speaks volumes. It whispers and shouts many things, but those are very personal, and I won't discuss them here. Just go to her latest installation on Mysterious Wave, a place dedicated to her minimal art.

Bring a friend, but I suggest that you go alone. Spend time there sitting and experiencing the art. I think I have about 8 hours into the place, and I want to go back again.

The Nutcracker in Virtual World

The Nutcracker is an odd tale of fantasy or a dream that a young girl has on Christmas night. The ballet was based on the original story, "The Nutcracker and the King of Mice" written by E.T.A Hoffman. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky wrote the score for the two act ballet.

Marius Petipa choreographed the story into the ballet that was revised by French author, Alexander Dumas. Dumas' version is the Nutcracker that we all love.

The story takes place at the Stahlbaum home where the family is celebrating their annual Christmas party. The children are usually shown dancing while the adults visit and dance as well. Godfather Drosselmeyer arrives with a special gift for both Clara and Fritz. Fritz becomes jealous of the wooden Nutcracker present that was given to Clara, and he grabs the wooden soldier and breaks it.

Clara's gift comes alive and takes her on a fantastic dream sequence with the Mouse King and an army of wooden toy solders. The two are escorted to the Land of Sweets by the Sugar Plum Fairy and Cavalier. The characters celebrate the victory over the Mouse King with a series of pas de deux by Spanish, Arabian, Russian, and Chinese dancers.

At the end, all the flowers come out to dance the finale with the Waltz of the Flowers. The Sugar Plum Fairy and the Cavalier dance the final Pas De Deux.

The Nutcracker is usually one of the first ballets that most children and adults will see. The sweet story and charming costumes draw the audience in at no matter what age you see this beautiful ballet. Family friendly, the ballet takes you on a fantasy ride of childhood memories and fears.

Here in the virtual world of Second Life, Ballet Pixelle has recreated the charming ballet for the Christmas season. The Nutcracker was the third ballet developed for the virtual world. Each year, Ballet Pixelle expands and recreates the story here in Second Life. Today, Boom Pony is streaming a dual live concert with two popular guitarists, Guitar Zane and TwinGhost Ronas. Two powerful musical presence vibrating off the majestic snowy-capped mountains in the background.

This year long art challenge is open to everyone in Second Life. It is a grand collaboration among major art houses & groups in Second Life, including The University of Texas San Antonio (UTSA), SL Arts, CARP, Pirats Art Network, Odyssey, Show & Tell, BOSL & UWA.

General Overview:

1) Theme is completely open. Take our breath away!
2) You can enter up to 2 entries each month, or any month that you choose. Closing date for the month is the 25th of any given month. Entries submitted after go to the following month.
3) Monthly winners will be displayed on UWA SIMS for up to a month.
4) A People's Choice Award will also be given every month. Voting panel will go up each month for the days between the closing of the month's entries and the announcement of the winners.

Contest Entry Rules:
1) Any artwork/ object can be submitted. They can be inanimate or have animation. They may contain scripts if you so choose - maximum script time of 0.5ms, and anything that runs at over 0.05ms is to have an on/off on touch with time out of 10 minutes max (if you are unsure of your piece's script load please contact one of the Challenge hosts to have it evaluated). 100 prim maximum. Objects that make sounds should be limited in range and should turn off automatically.
2) Note that by submitting an entry, you are give permission to the University of Western Australia to place the objects anywhere on UWA owned land, and to have information and images of the entries placed on UWA websites and on websites promoting the UWA SIMS or events held on the UWA SIMS.
5) A valid entry, is any object dropped onto the contest entry receiver. Pick up item from inventory while holding down the CTRL key, and drop it onto the contest entry billboard prim (relese the left mouse button when your entry is in position to be dropped in)
6) Alternate method of entry is to drop the object into the inventory of Jayjay Zane, who is executive officer for the 'UWA 3D Open Art Challenge’ or Jayjay Zifanwe
7) All entrants should join the group 'UWA 3D ART AND DESIGN CHALLENGE’

Logged into the BURN2 with my alt so that I could just manuever and teleport into the massive event. (You should have been to the real Burning Man as dust was the enemy there!)

I got there an hour early and the place was already packed and lag-o-licious. Fireworks in the sky and all kinds of beautiful particles were exploding everywhere on the four sims.

I knew I had to upload the pre-burn pictures now before I went crashola. It was inevitable as I had several windows open on my desktop trying to take pictures, blogging, uploading and blah blah blah!

I came to experience the whole thing again. Last year was incredible and I didn't want to miss this one. I'll try to load up the burn pictures as soon as I can, but I have a feeling the lag will get pretty bad once it starts!

I took so many pictures of BURN2 the last few days. I thought I should at least post a few. So many great things to see and experience on the dry playa, that it would take forever to go through all of it.

Lag was a bit much on the opening day, but I expected that. I used an alt to navigate around; one that had hardly anything in inventory. It really helped to have no scripted huds or attachments, too.

My favorite artists and their works are here. I am gaga over Nish Mip (she recently won UWA's 3D Design Challenge) and her cyber robot club/lounge "Robot Summer City." I could have hung out there all day.

Next favorite was Gracie Kendal. I have a few of her pieces from 2007 when I first ran across her work at a now defunct art gallery on the grid. Her Burning Man "painting" of swirls and textures had me walking and flying through it. There is a story told... an important one.

The cartoony, Mario-build was fabulous. Legos stacked and pieced together creating a huge monumental build. You could see it from across the sims! So sweet and charming and it brought a big smile to my face.

I did spend one entire afternoon with the Stilt Bitches Flying Circus. The freebies were so great. Stilts, costumes and fire juggling were given away. Everyone was dancing. I couldn't tear myself away.

I have only gone to a couple of parties as I have been super busy lately with other grid matters. I hit Barbs Kurka's "Barb's Psytrance Tent" a few times as I seem to know most of the dj's over there.

Live music was awesome. So many talented musicians are playing at the Center Tent. Make sure you go at least a few times to catch the different genres of music there.

It will be impossible to see everything. But, the weekend is almost here, so I hope to check out more!

On the Second Life blog today, there was an announcement that Philip Linden had a new look.

Today, the new Philip Linden was revealed!

And, boy does he look babe-a-licious!

Second Life resident creator Mars Absent was the winning submission for the new look for Phil's avatar.

Just in time for the opening of the new BURN2 under the reign of our resident dreamer and originator, Philip Linden aka Philip Rosedale. He is the reason why I came to this mad, mad world called Second Life.
Congrats Mars, the dude, looks hawt!

I have had the privilege of watching, viewing and supporting UWA - University of Western Australia's efforts in combining both education, art, design, machinima and challenge contest the last few months. The culmination of 841 entries were received over a course of a year starting on August 15, 2009. Yesterday, the winners were announced. JayJay sent over a transcript of the speech. Part of the speech was truncated as the SL grid was overwhelmed with the amount of people who attended this event. I managed to get there on a Sunday morning at 6AM my time on the west coast of USA. Without further ado, here is chat log:

"Greetings everyone, and welcome to the University of Western Australia, or UWA as she is known and also welcome to the Grand Finale of the UWA 3D Art & Design Challenge & MachinimUWA II. As is tradition at UWA, I would like to acknowledge that the University is situated on Nyoongar land and that the Nyoongar people remain the spiritual and cultural custodians of their land and continue to uphold their values, languages, beliefs and knowledge.

Today brings to an end the UWA 3D Art & Design Challenge which was launched on the 15th of August 2009, with 841 entries received across the IMAGINE Art Challenge and the FLAGSHIP Building Design Challenge. Today also sees the conclusion of MachinimUWA II: Art of the Artists and with this, we had 45 machinima submissions where the theme was to film the artworks submitted to the UWA Challenge.

Its been an absolute pleasure for me to work with all of you over the year, and especially to those who went above an beyond the call of duty to make all of this a success. Thank you quadrapop lane, curator of the UWA 3D Art & Design Challenge, thank you Taralyn Gravois, thank you LaPiscean Liberty, thank you Raphaella Nightfire. Also much thanks to those who have provided support and sponsorship which raised the overall prize pool from L$100,000 to more than L$1,000,000 now across Art, Architecture and Machinima. So I would like to also thank the Cultural Precinct at the University of Western Australia, ShedworX.com, the Casey Family of Western Australia, the Residents of Artemesia, MidnightRain Glas, Phillip Vought, Bohemian Ghost, Gumby Roffo, Sasun Steinbeck, Galea Yates, Kip Yellowjacket and a host of others.

Before any further announcements, first on the agenda today is our Special Guest Speaker whom I would like to sincerely thank for agreeing to attend and address everyone at this event. Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to introduce the creator of the legendary Ivory Tower Library of Primitives, and Grand Finale judge for the UWA 3D Art & Design Challenge, Lumiere Noir.

At the end of all the announcements, we will have the privilege of hearing Mommaluv Skytower singing live, and this will be followed by super Art DJ, Eifachfilm Varcirca, who is the definition of a multi-talented artiste having also been part of the UWA 3D Art Challenge across the year as well as machinimUWA II !

First... will be the announcements for MachinimUWA II: Art of the Artists. MachinimUWA II grew almost by accident, out of a desire to honour the wonderful work that the artists of the UWA 3D Art & Design Challenge had created, and so the theme was, 'create something that will take our breath away'. And the subject matter was the artwork of the Grand Finale of any of the works featuring in the July and August rounds of the 3D Art Challenge.

When the winners, it will be done in 1 minute intervals. We do invite everyone to comment and congratulate the winners and for the winners to respond before the next announcement (and if they could please use the SHOUT function :). Hopefully we can get pictures of you attending the event. If you do take them yourself, please email them to me at jayjayaustralia@hotmail.com. Now to explain how the judging was done. Each judge listed their top 8 in order of preference. 8 points was allocated for a 1st place vote, 7 points for a 2nd place vote, and so on, with 1 points being allocated for an 8th place vote. The top 3 were taken as a straight aggregate compiling the individual rankings of the 14 judges. The special awards were then selected by discussion among the judges taking into consideration the overall rankings. There was also a special award provided by Aview TV & LaPiscean Liberty.

First of all, and you can see the trouble started here, we have the Honourable Mention Prize. This is a single prize of L$10,000. However, the judges were hopelessly deadlocked. And so it was, that we had a 3-way tie for the Honourable Mention Prize, which becomes L$3,333 each! And so the Honourable Mention Prize for MachinimUWA II, goes to:

and The Honourable Mention Prize for MachinimUWA II, also goes to:
SUZY YUE, Across A Crowded Room

When all the statistics were done taking into account the judges rankings, this piece finished with 42 points, and 12 of the 14 judges listed this piece in their top 8. A wonderful whimsical story with a sublime message. The L$30,000 3rd Prize, goes to:

Next we come to 2nd Prize. Now truly, for 2nd Prize, when I did all the calculations following the judges submissions, I got the shock of my life! I apologize to this person, but I just had to shake my head, I can't believe this was selected for 2nd and so, the 2nd Prize of L$50,000, goes to:
NOBODY

Yes ladies and gentlemen.... nobody, because incredibly, we have a TIE for FIRST PLACE, on 60 points each. One of the 2 winners appeared on 13 of the 14 judges lists of top 8, while the other had 3 first place votes and 3 second place votes. No other piece had more than TWO 1st place votes and TWO 2nd place votes. So we had to recalibrate the prize, and put the 1st & 2nd Prize together and divide by 2, making that L$55,000 for each of the two 1st Prizes!

And now, we move to the Grand Finale of the UWA 3D Art & Design Challenge. Before announcing the winners here, there are a few things I do need said.

First please help me thank the curator of the UWA 3D Art & Design Challenge once again, who has for an entire year, magnificently marshalled the 841 entries that I allowed to come in at all times of the day and night with not a single day break as to when the works were submitted, and not a single day when the gallery was closed across the year. Ladies & gentlemen, quadrapop Lane.

And sadly, we have to announce that quadrapop will from today be stepping down as the curator of the UWA 3D Art & Design Challenge, as the Challenge comes to a full stop, and qpop will be able to get the great breat she deserves! Thank you quadrapop Lane!

I would also like to thank Taralyn Gravois for her great work in being the Director of the UWA-BOSL Amphitheatre, and looking after events held at the 4-SIM Theatre. Sadly, she is also stepping down today, as a number of other pressures wont allow her to continue in her role. Thank you Taralyn!

The Torch passes however. FreeWee Ling will take over as curator at UWA & Chantal Harvey will take over at this theatre! 3 Cheers for FreeWee & Chantal!

Now, what is there to take over at UWA? Well, I won't have a NC to distribute for a few weeks yet, but basically once the curtain comes down today, the UWA 3D Open Art Challenge (L$1,000,000 Prize Pool), which again will run for one year will kick off. This will be a Grand Collaboration among the major art houses of SL, and aside from the top 3 monthly awards, in place of the Honourable Mention Awards, we will have a monthly Pirats Prize (selected by Merlina Rokocoko & Newbab Zsigmond), an Odyssey Prize (selected by Fau Ferdinand & Lizsolo Mathilde), an SL Arts Prize (selected by Gleman Jun & Sunset Quinnell), a Show & Tell Prize (selected by Florenze Kerensky & Barney Boomslang), a CARP Prize (selected by Josina Burgess & Velasquez Bonetto) and a BOSL Prize (selected by Frolic Mills & Giela Delpaso).

The rules for this will be simple. The theme is 'Create something that will take our breath away', and the prim limit is 100! As it always has been. So anyway, the receiver for the works is in the same location as before !

Professor Ted Snell, Director of the UWA 3D Art & Design Challenge whose 5 minute meeting with me 2 days before the very first mini-Launch we had at UWA in August 2009 sparked off these challenges said, It began with a rush but the entries just kept coming, rising from over thirty in the first month to a final total of over one hundred artworks in the final competition. What was most exciting was the obvious increase in
the standard of entries, the increasing sophistication of the conceptual basis of the works and the extraordinary skill in rendering them within the
virtual world. "

As with the Machinima, I want to thank and acknowledge the judging panel. There were 23 judges in all, however 22 for either the Flagship or Imagine side as one of the judges, only looked at the Flagships, while another only looked at the Art.

For the people's choice, all of SL could vote for their favourite pieces across the month of September, and had to use a HUD (created by quadrapop) to visit all the builds rezzed across the grid, as it needed more than 30,000 prims to have everything up. And I need to thanks Caren McCaw & Nyx Breen (Annapurna), Dijodi Dubratt (Toor), quadrapop Lane (Poorlatrice), Kip Yellowjacket (Virtlantis), Lilli Field (Mysten), Phillip Vought (Acquitaine), Cuwynne Deerhunter & Eliza Wierwight (Patron) and the LEA for valuable space to rezz the works.

And so for the PEOPLE'S CHOICE AWARD, IMAGINE ART- NON SCRIPTED 3rd prize goes to (L$3,000):

And now we come to the crunch. The overall juried Grand Prizes for the UWA 3D Art & Design competition. The results are extremely interesting, and I do need to explain how the Judging was done. Each judge listed their top 10 in order for IMAGINE & FLAGSHIP & top 5 for the non-scripted. Works receiving a 1st place vote were allocated 6 points, 2nd place 5 points, 3rd 4 points, 4th 3points, 5th 2 points, and 6th - 10th place votes received 1 point each. The winners are taken as a straight aggregate compiling the individual rankings of each member of the judging panel. No one individual had any greater influence than any other. Every single piece featured in the top 10 of at least 2 judges. Every single piece was also NOT in the top 10 of at least 2 judges. So there was great individual variability, however, when put together, I am staggered by how clearly the results come across.

First the Non-Scripted. I will reveal the aggregate points received by the winning pieces, and also of the ones which just missed out. The Prize winners will receive special trophies created by Miso Susanowa who won the Trophy Challenge some months back run by FreeWee Ling and the Residents of Artemesia. There are 3 prizes for the non-scripted. It was very close, between 3rd prize and the works in 4th - 6th. There was in fact a 3-way tie for 4th place in the non-scripted, these being:

4th (non-scripted) BLACK PEARL by Solkide Auer - 30 points
4th (non-scripted) THE NIGHT ORCHID by soror Nishi - 30 points
4th (non-scripted) BLOOM GLOW by Sledge Roffo - 30 points

All said and done, the overall IMAGINE ART- NON SCRIPTED 3rd prize, on 37 points goes to (L$5,000):

For overall IMAGINE ART - NON SCRIPTED 2nd prize, on 73 points goes to (L$10,000):

Now for the Flagship. There are 5 prizes, but I will reveal the relative positions and point allocations for the top 10 so everyone can get a sense of how things shaped up. Again remember, these are not ratings of artworks... these are more similar to how things work when selecting the MVP for a football game or the world footballer of the year. 6th through 10th place from the 23 builds overall fell as follows:

Now its a stunning result for 1st place, and in fact what happened with this was the reason why I decided to release the point totals of the cumulative judges rankings, and ensure that the prizes extended to the top 5, instead of what is was going to be initially, which was a top 2.

And so, the GRAND CHAMPION of the IMAGINE ART CHALLENGE, on 61 points (L$75,000) is:
UMBRELLAS by Nish Mip

Its almost unfathomable. To achieve what Nish has, in taking the Top 2 spots from amongst 772 artworks across the year. I cannot begin to calculate the odds against that happening. UMBRELLAS received SIX 1st place votes and only 2 other works received more than ONE 1st place vote being WILLOW & THE LAST OCEAN which each received THREE.

The BURN2 is coming up very soon in just a few days. Builders in Second Life look forward to this event because of the incredible display of art and creations there.

The inspiration there is phenomenal as each of us gravitate to the very best builders and creators on this grid.

Blackwater Sculpture Art Gallery is an outdoor installation of historical and new builders of Second Life. From Starax, the ultimate prim builder to the newer artists using sculptys, the gallery is an absolute must see for anyone who builds.

I frequent this gallery as myself or as my builder alt. There is a meditative quality about the place as you wander through the art work there.

There is a wonderful collection of Starax here, too. He is my most favorite of all the SL artists. His work is astounding even today. Though technology has improved, his builds were of pure prims... and yes, the prim count is enormous! LOL!

Take some time to go before you go to the BURN2. Enjoy ART!

After all these years, someone has terraformed a tiny, small parcel next to my old home on Bisque. The coastline has been destroyed!

My old neighbor, a beta avatar, who was there forever has sold his property. ( I miss him already) Sadly, the avatar who purchased the land, has put up ban lines and terraformed to the maximum height of 40+ meters right on the coast. Yikes!

My house is open to the public and has always been a retreat for me and my friends and corporate guests. I don't recall ever having ban lines on my property.

Hopefully, the avi will bring the walls down on both the land, the ban lines and their heart.

For all you new builders, land owners; walk your land and your neighbors. Check the view and see if you have destroyed it. Live together in harmony just as you would in the real world. It matters.

Beautiful Moments are Magical

This place will kill you and your soul. The backstabbing, the drama of the grid is enough to chase out the strongest. There are not-so-nice people here. Some with problems so deep that one can only imagine. And, yet, I have met some of the most wonderful avis/people here in the world.

The ones I love are supporters in every sense of the word. They come through with advice and knowledge that helps with everything that I do. People here are very generous and kind. Those are the ones I gravitate towards and include in a special circle of friends.

Yesterday was magic. A dear friend, an old friend of Xavier's extended family, has given me a gift of art. The art is well-known and the artists on this grid will recognize it immediately. Lika is back on the grid building his houses. He is a builder and artist who originally created the "Cave" that we have rezzed for special occasions.

I am a very emotional person. Tears flow easily when I am presented with great music and art. Live musician, Max Kleene has moved me to tears so many times that I feel almost silly over my reaction. And, the first time I saw a Starax at an outdoor gallery, I was so overwhelmed with just the building of the sculpture itself. When I saw Ballet Pixelle's first performance, my breathe caught in the back of my throat as I choked up with tears.

In real life, the tears flow even when I listen to a youth symphony. I hear the errors and the missteps, but I feel their passion as they play. I know these young musicians are not looking for stardom; they play because they love the music. Outsider art are gems. Precious pieces done by people with no training or pretension. They make art because their souls demand it. I have been overwhelmed with this type of art.

For me, it's not a measure of technical excellence but rather the presentation and the delivery. There are many great musicians, artists and dancers in this world. But, there are only a rare few that will touch our hearts. And, that is something very magical... and when you are there at that moment, there is a sense of seeing something that no one else has experienced.

When I watched the finale of America's Got Talent, the show let me know that I am not alone in this feeling. This is why everyone in the entire world connects to certain artists. And the gift that I received yesterday was one that I had connected to the very first few months that I was on this grid.

Yesterday was pure magic.

This is why I am here. This is why rafee is an avatar for outdoor recreation and the protection of water, streams, rivers, oceans and wetlands. Listen carefully and apply these concepts in your own backyard.

These are the champions who dedicate their lives for a singular cause to protect one river in their community. Protect the land, rivers and oceans in your community by volunteering your time and efforts. California American River is a jewel of a river that stretches from the high Sierra Nevada to the urban cities in the valley. The river gives us drinking water, agricultural water, power, recreation and beauty and is worth protecting for all.

Mankind Tracer's Peace, Love & Belief IV Mega Concert

MANKIND TRACER'S
PEACE, LOVE & BELIEF IV MEGA CONCERT:

On October 3rd, Mankind Tracer will be holding the largest ever multi-sim concert event in Second Life's history.

Over the past few years, Mankind Tracer, SL's most recognized live performer, has held his Peace, Love & Belief Concerts, with the last PLB III on 34 different sims. During PLB III, Mankind played a few songs at each venue, jumping from sim to sim for over 6 hours straight. While this is still the recognized record for most simultaneous sims, Mankind will be going for 50 sims at Peace, Love & Belief IV.

The major difference this year is that PLB IV will be a Live Video Concert. The concert is planned to last for three straight hours. There will also be a live audio stream just in case residents don't have the ability to see video. Mankind will stream his live show across SL via the new "stage screen" and thus will not need to jump sims. This year, there will still be the Land Mark Board which, as with all previous PLB Events, will clearly display the names of all participating venues/sims and each will be clickable to their respective LM's.

The idea of Peace, Love & Belief is something Mankind Tracer offers all attendees at his shows and has been doing so for well over three and a half years since he first started performing. In Mankind's own word's, "I wish you peace in your minds, love in your hearts and belief in the generosity and the goodness of the people that share the world with us." Millions of people have likely heard his message and his hopes are to spread his message even further.

Participating venues will be provided with a "Package" which will include all setup material including the video screen, audio stream info, the LM Board, promotional material and an instruction notecard for setup. You will need to place the provided texture in your land settings under "Media Texture".

During his long time performing in SL, Mankind Tracer has won many prestigious awards, performed countless charitable events for both large and personal causes and he has released 3 SL CD's which have seen tremendous success in SL. His concerts are usually packed with most being driven by audience requests and of course his truly amazing and insightful original music. Yikes!

I got a tp to the Doomed Ship by some of my builders. The words were simple, "You gotta see this!"

When I arrived, I saw a typical sci-fi build of a space station or spaceship with the nice textures of a mysterious futuristic place.

It was obvious that the place had the erie atmosphere of an abandoned station where something terrible had happened... role-play was de rigueur.

As we all walked through the corridors, opening doors and climbing stairs, I was suddenly attacked by a green tenacled creature near an opening. Arrrggghhh!

The attack was unusual in that the scripter had a perverse sense of humor as the creatures raped us in a horror reminding me of past alien movies. (Seems like every old science fiction movie has a scene or implied scene about an alien rape.)

OMG! we all yelled as we realized what we were seeing. Weird pink penis jolted out as the creature mounted us. Gawd, what an animation!

Go check it out, but remember I warned you. Revel in the animations and the build; it was amazing. I just hope my avatar doesn't have an alien baby!

Ballet Pixelle™ (formerly Second Life Ballet) will premiere its ninth work “Avatara” in June 2010. Ballet Pixelle™ is the first performing ballet company in the virtual global community Second Life. Says the Company's founder, Inarra Saarinen, “As artistic director of the Company since its inception, I have enormous pride in Ballet Pixelle™. Our goal is to investigate and explore the interaction and intersection of physical and virtual dance. We are excited to celebrate the future of dance. We are dancing into the digital future!”

Before there was Second Life, there were avatars...

Avatāra (Sanskrit for "descent") refers to a deliberate descent of a deity from heaven to earth, and is mostly translated into English as "incarnation", but more accurately as "appearance" or "manifestation". Isn't that what it would be if a virtual being became a physical being? And if a physical being became a virtual being...

A real, physical dancer wonders what it would be like to exist in a virtual world where she could move past her physical bodily limits --- without regard to her joints and muscles. And without physics limits -- to hover and fly at will. Is there such a place? Can she visit? What a memory to hold!

Members of Ballet Pixelle™ come together from all over the world, Japan, Europe, and North America. Animations are created by Inarra Saarinen and put into dance phrases. There are no artifical synchronizing devices and the dancers truly perform dancing with each other and the music. University of Western Australia just held their UWA 3D Art and Design competition. Allowing the people to choose their favorite artists and giving them awards, UWA encourages artists in Second Life to create digitally what can only be done here.

My very favorite was Nishi Mip's works. Her "Umbrellas" was the People's Choice 1st Place Award, but I also loved her other piece with the robots housed inside a strange orange cubicle of programmed lights. What a remarkable artist she is!

Another favorite was Uby Ifu's "Tristan Areless" avatar. Amazingly real, as real as an avatar can be; the piece made me smile.

With the arts suffering world wide from a lack of government and consumer support due to economic woes, I was glad to see that education and UWA step in to support the artists here.

Thank you to UWA for their wonderful art and design competition. Here is the notecard info that you can collect at the show. To the left of the voting wall, you will find a click and receive board for a notecard full of information. Here is what it says:

Since 1995, I have been blogging on the internet. Of course, then we called it journaling a log about our experiences. A digitally written diary of the minutiae of our lives. Ridiculously unimportant and filled with personal anecdotes about nothing. Occasionally, I would mention a cool product that I bought or a place that I went to such as a restaurant or store. And, even then, the journals were just my musings.

When the internet exploded with journals, we started calling them blogs. Blah blah blah logs became blogs. The content was still about nothing much, but we could see that someone was reading our little missives and it made a difference in our businesses. Another way to connect with our consumer base.

We started reviewing the things we liked and the things we lived with daily. A restaurant would send a voucher for a dinner or a manufacturer would send a freebie t-shirt. Benign gifts of accolades and thank-you's.

Then, we started getting the big gifts. The stuff that was expensive and made us feel a bit creepy accepting. Sure, we loved their products but it made me feel like a paid agent for their company. So, I made a decision and said, "No more.

The decision was made way back in the late1990's. I would have to check my archived files for those first disclosure contracts. Yes, I had my entire team sign them and the legal language was harsh. If you wrote something and you were given a monetary gift, you were fired.

In this virtual world of international interests, the lines blur. People send gifts to each other for all kinds of kindness. I get gifts from avis from my group, and I return them or delete them after letting them know that I can't accept them. On THE A LIST! the lines blur even more. We are a business group and our members give the group gifts. As long as it is a gift that is shared among the entire group, then Xavier and I feel that it is not a gift for blogging.

The problem is that if a gift is given and I wasn't online and it is sitting in my inventory; that fact alone may taint my reputation if ever the logs were reviewed. It is a difficult situation for me. In THE A LIST! we have asked our contributors to disclose gifts, and we have a disclaimer on those blogs. Because both of us are on American soil with FTC -Federal Trade Commission blogging laws over our heads, we want to try our best to adhere to US laws.

We know how ridiculous laws can be, but this one tries to protect the consumer. I think we know gifts are given to bloggers from Consumer Report. It is obvious that the product manufacturer gave the blogger the product for review. The reason we believe Consumer Reports reviews is that the evaluations can be harsh... very harsh. So, we believe that the products are honestly evaluated and CR has a disclaimer.

I am the blogger on THE A LIST! and I want to make sure that people know that I do not accept gifts from any of the group members unless they have shared that gift with the entire group. So, my blogs do not have a disclaimer. Some of the contributors have a disclaimer on their post because it is a product review and the item was given by the creator.

How the FTC reviews the millions of blogs in the real world or virtual world is interesting in itself. And, the law will fine the blogger and the product creator, too. Ouch! Double slam. So, we try to protect both interests. No gifts period is a good policy. It's best that we stay as squeaky clean as possible. As far as some industries, it's practically a given that those gifts to the avis are for reviews. But, now we disclose that in those specific posts and let you decide.

University of Pacific is in the heart of the Great Valley in California. In close proximity to San Francisco and the State Capitol of Sacramento, UOP resides in Stockton.

A beautiful brick campus, it is a lovely place to hang out and just meditate on the brick walls or near the library.

In Second Life, UOP is a strong presence. We met Pacific Tigerpaw, the administrator and manager of the sim.

I built my first sky waterfall on Bisque in 2007. The build has
morphed many times and I placed the current version on RiverLand.

My inspiration was the sky waterfall at SL Botanical Gardens.
The builder there has been my most favorite builder here in Second Life.
Her region is one of the best on the grid.

My version is a bit psy and a nod to the incredible waterfalls that
I have seen in real life. Only Mother Nature can create what I have
seen and my pitiful attempts are just to pay homage to her.

I own WET Builders, WETLands Group, and both regions
WETLands and RiverLand. As a builder, my focus
is nature and water elements. Of course, this is Second Life, so I usually add a bit
of psy to the build, too.

All my lands on the mainland and the regions are open to the public.
The only place that has barriers is my personal home. You are all
welcome to everything else. Please enjoy!

There is always a great music stream or dj there playing disco, progressive, electro or anything in between.

This is a Japanese community that welcomes everyone from around the world.
Languages of the planet can be heard on the dance floor. Woot!

I just loaded the new update for viewer 2. The rezz time seems much faster now. But, I am still missing prims off of my shoes and parts of my hair when I log into a venue that is exceptionally busy.

I tested the new viewer at Lion's Gate, Jenna Dirval's new venue for live music. There was approximately 50+ avatars there. I crashed when I turned on the stream... poof, with no warning.

When I came back, everything rezzed immediately except for one small patch of hair at the back of my head. LOL! I was even able to take photos without the usual gray blobs. So, I am a happy picture taker once again.

They did fix the annoying orbit-zoom-pan thingy at the bottom... now both horizontal/veritical and orbit are there without having to click back and forth. (I just wish I knew how to make that block image smaller).

My inventory still does that annoying bounce when I am trying to do a search or scroll. Please fix that! It is very dangerous as I work very quickly and have inadvertently deleted important stuff when I meant to delete a duplicate object. Now, before I delete my trash; I quickly scan the entire trash list just in case!

I do like this viewer (please don't send daggers and arrows my way peeps) as it keeps my desktop very neat and tidy when I am building. Notices and IM's are not as annoying (much to the chagrin of all the marketers) and I can focus when I am working.

A few things are kinda buggy... the inventory bouncy thing is super borked. And, my inventory load is very slow. I usually have to log in two to three times for everything to load. Sometimes, half my inventory is missing... luckily, I am not a newbie or that would freak me out! After a second log in, everything seems to come back.

As with anything new, people will complain. I always look forward to doing things different and new. It keeps my mind challenged and makes the time here fresh. I am used to this viewer now, and, I am comfortably building with it. So, thank you Linden Lab... keep pressing forward until you guys get it totally right. I see the light now at the end of the tunnel... and the future looks bright.
