This is why I am here. This is why rafee is an avatar for outdoor recreation and the protection of water, streams, rivers, oceans and wetlands. Listen carefully and apply these concepts in your own backyard.



These are the champions who dedicate their lives for a singular cause to protect one river in their community. Protect the land, rivers and oceans in your community by volunteering your time and efforts. California American River is a jewel of a river that stretches from the high Sierra Nevada to the urban cities in the valley. The river gives us drinking water, agricultural water, power, recreation and beauty and is worth protecting for all.

My heartfelt thanks to this crew of volunteers, artists and filmmakers for a job well-done!

second life mixing with real life

So hard to believe that I have been on the Second Life grid this long. I still remember 2007 when I arrived on the color sims near the a popular sandbox. Building and creating my waterfalls... trying to mimic the world I really live in with the rivers, streams and natural places near my home. I have learned a lot here in Second Life. I learned how to build and though I am still a rudimentary scripter, it's amazing that I can even do that now!

My two regions have been so fun create. Like others, the passion we put into our land is the vision inside our heads. Some builders create fantastic fantasy worlds while others like me try to copy Mother Nature. It has brought a profound appreciation to the real world that I experience.



I am lucky. I travel, I see beautiful places on this earth and I try to bring that experience into the virtual world here. Without any fanfare, my regions are now in Second Life's showcase. I am so proud to have been chosen to be on that list. Look for WETLands in the Parks and Nature category; we are at #4 now. Wow! And, as a co-owner of THE A LIST! my actual land is actually on LL's list!

I have taken thousands of pictures and they are uploaded to my avatar,  rafee's flickr and koinup. I created several RAFTWET Jewell youtube by myself and with my friend,  Aoshi. And, the blogs... gawd, do I ever stop blogging? LOL! But, I needed something more.

A very good friend was on the Discovery Channel's Deadliest Catch videography team that finally won the Emmy. After a few years of being nominated, this death-defying team won this year. So, I talked to my friend and asked him if he would film a whitewater sequence in real life and incorporate my avatar rafting on WETLands. He was intrigued by the idea and enjoyed visiting both my land and SL.

Enjoy the video and then come on over to WETLands and try the rafts... or just bring a date and hang out in a natural park-like setting and just chill. There's an outdoor ballroom next to the bay area, both romantic and casual at the same time. Have fun!

Last night I spent a wonderful evening at Criss Museum of Contemporary Art. Scotj Criss and his lovely partner, Katerina Burner held "A Baroque Ball" and we attended in full French fashion circa 1600.






The Barque Ball was highlighted with a live reading of poetry and live music with Azael Glom who played popular classical compositions on piano.









I also created a short video of photo slides of the event on my raftwet jewell youtube channel; just look for Criss Museum of Contemporary Art - Second Life.

Music Friends

So much is happening on the grid! New music, new musicians... new new new! I have been talking to old friends and checking out what they are doing in Second Life and in real life.

(I just did a WETLands & RiverLand video from old pictures and photos from 2007 - 2010)


A group of real life friends are hitting the success mark in music. Signing contracts with the real deal of producers, record labels and deals galore are coming their way. After years of practice, learning from others and band drama, the rewards are finally here.

My favorite band currently is the Ganglians. A psychedelic, surf band-indie rock-twisted-psycho-billy-twang-twang of dreamy music with a punk influence kinda band. Yah... they play it all. Their influences are many and when Ryan sent me the link to his post... well, I gotta share it with you.

Those of you who appreciate art and music will understand these musical links. The influences come from so many genres, and these young musicians have definitely hit a buzz out in the world. Because, I constantly hear the refrains of surf music in a lot of new music, I put together a surf-band-rockabilly-cramps kinda rafee surf playlist on my youtube channel. Enjoy!

RAFTWET & XAVIER Dancing in Second Life

Ok. We were too tired tonight for much of anything. Both of us were in admin mode working on THE A LIST! Too tired to talk to anyone except each other. Talk Talk Talk... and more talk. Strategies. Implementation. Blah blah blah...

Our avis look bored. Poor Raftwet, poor Xavier... Both avies sitting in lounge chairs at the WETLands outdoor ballroom. We had a cool jazz media stream going as we worked but... they needed to dance and both of us needed to rezz stuff! I tp'd first to my favorite sim... a little sandbox so that we could rezz some fun stuff together.



The moon was full. Quiet solitude. I put an 80's indie, alternative music stream on, and we let our avatars dance to the tunes. I put on Lonetorus's dance orb, and he put on his JMD particle hud. And, our party began.

After 100 frames or so... well, I had to make a movie. Here it is. Start dancing.

RAFTWET Jewell Videos

My wrist is killing me and the thumb feels just as bad. Oh, it's the old carpal tunnel syndrome back to bug me again. Those of you who work on computers know what I mean. Builders in the virtual world, photo junkies, bloggers and video makers suffer the worst. We are always dropping, dragging and cutting and pasting stuff on our desktop. And, that puts a lot of pressure on the wrist and thumb.



Typing doesn't seem to hurt though so I thought I would let you all know that I have been making little videos using all my photos that I have collected these past three years. (I never could figure out the machinima stuff on my hardware system... so I leave that to you experts.) The photos are not quite an animation, but it does feel nice to watch while listening to music, too.

This first attempt shows this past Saturday night, January 16, 2010. We danced at Erotic City and listened to dj Sneaky Krugman, then over to Dance4Life for dj DDirty Adamczyk, then off to live music set for Trav McCullough and Clarice Karu, then to The Musician's Lair for Noma Falta and then back to the outdoor ballroom on WETLands.

THE A LIST! group is celebrating one year with our members. We want to thank all 350+ group members for all their support.

Xavier chose some of his favorite dj's to do the honors for the music today. They range in genre and include Electro, Mash, Industrial, Psy and more.

Our dream of unifying the grid in a peaceful, harmonious way is happening. Sharing resources and laying down the swords, the fun comes when we all join to bring the best of the best of Second Life to the grid.

Dancer Auditions for Ballet Pixelle
(formerly Second Life Ballet)

SUNDAY, JANUARY 17 AT 5PM SLT


“If you have the chance to sit it out or dance . . .Dance!”


Ballet Pixelle has opportunities for dancers to join this dedicated company of artists in Second Life. This is a unique opportunity to blend the best of artistic and technical worlds, creating performances that stretch dance and storytelling possibilities within the ballet tradition.


The company performs original ballets choreographed by Inarra Saarinen to music created for each ballet by SL musicians. Performances are twice a week at Ballet Pixelle’s theatre in the IBM sim. In addition to the performance schedule, each ballet requires several weeks of rehearsal.


Poseballs and automatic animations are not used in Ballet Pixelle performances. Dancers move independently, enacting steps and gestures coordinated with the rest of the cast and to the music. For example, a typical rehearsal period during creation of a new ballet is 3 to 4 months with two or more rehearsals a week each lasting approximately two hours.  We all have First Lives, but to be fair to the company and the collaborative nature of our work, Ballet Pixelle must be considered a priority. Professionalism and serious commitment are required; a sense of humor is appreciated :-)


Dancers who want to test the experience have an opportunity at the Second Life 5th Birthday exhibit space of Ballet Pixelle. In the center of the exhibit space a dance floor with “follow the footsteps” shoeprints invites visitors to pick up a package of three Ballet Pixelle animations and dance by sequencing them along the choreographic diagram. This activity provides a sense of the way Ballet Pixelle dancers work in performance. 


Auditions will be held Sunday, January 17 at 5pm SLT

Qualifications:  


Applicants should be mature in First Life and have at least six months experience in Second Life.


It is preferred that dancers know some basic ballet and theater terminology.


In addition, participants should have Second Life skills including how to change clothing and skin, transform shape including gender, and move fluidly in three dimensional space and rez basic objects.


At the audition:


Come dressed in something simple such as a leotard, preferable a solid single color. Do not wear shoes with heels. Do not wear anything with bling.  Do not wear tutus or dress as a character.


We will audition dancers individually, but other auditioners may sit in the audience. 


You will be given animations at the audition. You do not need animations, gestures, or a HUD.


We welcome all interested dancers for consideration. Our cast and crew enjoy this tremendously satisfying and exciting creative process. Register your interest by sending a completed copy of the notecard in the box or send a notecard with details to Calia Cachin.

BALLET PIXELLE CREW POSITIONS FOR 2010


Ballet Pixelle has a number of open and understudy crew positions for 2010.  Applications are accepted by Amelie Dibou, Ballet Mistress.  Please put your name and position in the title of the notecard.


Ballet Pixelle is a professional Second Life AND Real Life Company that requires a serious commitment in time and dedication.


We are looking for commitment first and foremost -- you MUST be able to attend almost all scheduled rehearsals (so we don't have to repeat) and almost each scheduled performance (so we don't scramble at the last minute).  If you cannot, please do not apply or accept a role.  Although we all have First Lives, Ballet Pixelle is also considered a priority.  


But this is a fabulous and creative team with humor and fun!  Pay in applause.


=> Currently, Americas zone has one performance a week on Sundays at 5pm SLT.  With pre-curtain and rehearsals on Wednesdays, that is about four-five hours a week. An extra show may be added during the holidays.  Flexibility and reliability are important.  


PUBLIC RELATIONS:  Handles  publicity, including coordinating with web site, Events listing, posters, in SL.  Also handles RL public relations with major international dance and art magazines, TV shows, professional conferences.  Writes and distributes Press Releases.  Assists Director and coordinates public pelations.  RL and SL experience required.  Must be over 6 months old, good with people and contacts, and an excellent writer.


MC:  Runs the show from an audience point of view.  Speaks extemporaneous and  previously scripted explanations of the ballet via a HUD, provides ad lib patter, and facilitates the post-show question & answer session.  Multi-lingual helpful; HUD may be used.  Must be over 2 months old.


SET/LIGHTS MANAGER:  Runs the sets for many performances.  Handles rez-faux boxes and activates curtain/scrim changes via a HUD during show.  Timing is critical and may work with recorded or live sound.  May also handle props.  Responsible, and must show up for each show scheduled.  Knowledge of builds preferred.  Must be over 4 months old.


COSTUME DESIGNER:  Designs costumes with the Artistic Director and works with the Wardrobe Mistress to maintain costumes, accessories, and props.  This is a serious position and requires a great deal of experience.  Costumes go through a number of iterations.  Must be able to work with entire Company.  All costumes must work carefully with original movement animations.  Must be over 9 months old and have designed and created pieces for men and women.  


SOUND ENGINEER / MANAGER:  Runs sound for many performances and rehearsals.  Must be comfortable with Shoutcast, Winamp, and Media setttings on land.  Playlists can be used.  Working from stage management cues is essential since the dancers do not work with poseballs but truly dance with the music.  Must be over 6 months old.


STAGE MANAGER:  Runs the entire performance and must be present when scheduled.  Primarily responsible for calling cues -- getting dancers in costume, in places, cueing music, set, lights, spot, curtain/scrim, and MC.  May also assist the Director, as needed.  Responsible, calm in the presence of crisis, able to make decisions before and during show, and must be organized.  RL theatre/dance experience needed.  Must be over 6 months old.


SPOT OPERATOR:  Ability to run a tracking spot via HUD and understand and be responsive to stage management cues.  Must be over 2 months old.


USHER:  Helps people find seats.  Explains and answers some technical questions for example getting a playbill when sitting, turning on music player.  Helps choose usher costumes for performances.  Minimal time required.  Male or female.  Must be over 1 month old.

January 1, 2010! Woot! OMG it is the new year... a brand spanking new year and there is still more to do and see on the Second Life grid.






Tonight, I am rocking out with old friends at the open air venue called Rumours Club. Sweet!






Peachie Hold was dj'ing hot rock tunes that included ACDC, Nickelback, Judas Priest, Rolling Stones and more. A fun rocking set that had me going on this Friday night.
